BEAM PROGRAM ASSISTANT 

 

Hours of Operation: 9am-9pm. Work schedule may include days, evenings, and weekend shifts, based on availability. 

Availability Required: 6-12 hours per week. (New hires will work approximately 4 hours per week until fully trained.) 

Compensation: $13.05 per hour 

Description: Program Assistants will learn to safely and effectively use makerspace equipment and software, as well as training users (students, staff, and campus-wide faculty) in best practices and safety for use of the makerspace equipment. Equipment includes 3D printers, laser cutters, embroidery machines, wood shops, a metal shop, sewing machines, vinyl cutters, and others. 

BeAM Program Assistants will provide general assistance, skill set-based fabrication process advice, technical consultations, and problem-solving assistance for users. 

 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Staff BeAM Makerspaces at Murray Hall, Hanes Art Center, and Carmichael Residence Hall. 
  • Act as safety monitor to ensure safe operations within the Makerspaces. 
  • Open & close spaces and grant appropriate access to users based on their training certifications. 
  • Follow greeting procedures and log visitors into the Makerspace check-in/out system. 
  • Perform basic to intermediate equipment maintenance. (On-the-job training provided) 
  • Lead group tool trainings and occasional tours for various groups as needed. 
  • Provide user support during open hours for technical, design, and fabrication purposes, helping them to safely utilize the Makerspaces. 
  • Contribute to aspects relating to the improvement of instruction, teaching, planning, or outreach at BeAM.  

 

Essential Qualifications 

  • Enrolled as a student at UNC Chapel Hill. 
  • Can commit to arriving on time for a regular work schedule. 
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.  
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Talent for managing multiple projects, prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines. 
  • Strong curiosity for learning, maintaining, and troubleshooting Makerspace equipment (growth mindset). 
  • Confidence leading trainings or workshops for user groups. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Hands-on experience with any of the following Makerspace tools and their applications:  
  • Software: Adobe Creative Cloud, TinkerCAD, Autodesk Fusion 360, Microsoft Office, etc. 
  • Equipment: 3D printers, laser cutters, hand tools, power tools, woodworking tools, electronic soldering and relevant components, sewing machines, vinyl cutters, and embroidery machines. 
  • Customer service experience: interacting with customers/patrons, providing informed assistance, maintaining a high level of professional service. 
  • Completed one or more of the following BeAM certifications: BeAM101, laser cutter, 3D printer, wood shop, vinyl cutter, or sewing.
