GE Girls Camp at BeAM
The GE Girls Camp at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, visited our Murray Hall BeAM location recently. This program, currently active at over twenty university campuses world-wide, and in its first year here at UNC-CH, encourages young girls from middle through high school to explore the world of science, technology, engineering and math, STEM, and STEM-based careers. Girls in the program will be exposed to STEM topics & STEM careers in a fun, unique and interactive way, with hands-on experiences that they would not find anywhere else. Since its inception, GE Girls has reached hundreds of girls who will continue to explore STEM and engage with the program throughout their high school years.
The girls toured our makerspace, learning about our laser cutters, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and other machines and technologies offered for learning, research, and creative activities. They then participated in a hands-on activity, making a cell-phone stand from pre laser-cut parts.
Through our 3D printing capabilities, the Murray makerspace helped reinforce concepts of prototyping and design thinking by providing the girls with a 3D composite of a GE Aviation Engine mock component. The girls then saw the actual piece in person during their subsequent tour of GE Aviation Facility in Durham.
