Remote Learning with BeAM

Although BeAM staff have implemented various operating procedures to safely open the makerspaces for in-person coursework, BeAM recognizes that many instructors and their students are fully remote during the pandemic period.

BeAM wants to support you and your students in your design and making endeavors, no matter where they take place – online, at home, or in person. To support remote makerspace learning, BeAM staff have put together resources and programs that are available to all UNC course instructors.

Online Tool Trainings

Any UNC student, staff, or faculty can self-enroll into the ‘BeAM Training’ Sakai site to kickstart their BeAM training. Completing the online module for BeAM 101 unlocks access to the online materials for all other tool trainings – 3D printer, laser cutter, sewing machine, and more. These online tool trainings are a combination of Sakai content and a self-guided practice projects, many of which focus on digital design that can be completed at home.

Fill out the contact form below if you would like to be added as a Course Instructor to the BeAM Training Sakai site in order to track your students’ training progress.

Virtual Design Workshops

Want to integrate a digital design project into your course curriculum? BeAM offers virtual design workshops in two types of software: TinkerCAD (typically used for 3D printing) and Adobe Illustrator (typically used for laser cutting, vinyl cutting, or machine embroidery.) A BeAM staff member will attend your class session via Zoom, lead students through the basics of digital design with either TinkerCAD or Illustrator, and guide students in completing a simple practice project.

Fill out the contact form below if you would like to schedule a virtual design workshop.

Custom Practice Projects

BeAM’s online tool trainings are a combination of Sakai content and a short practice project. Want BeAM staff to create a custom practice project tailored to your course objectives that still satisfies the requirements of a BeAM tool trainings? Check out existing practice project examples from these courses: PHYS 100, CLAS 059, APPL 110.

Fill out the contact form below if you would like to work with BeAM staff to develop a custom practice project.
